Dance de Rock back to thrill Coimox Valley dance fans and help Tour de Rock

No matter age or experience, it's almost time to dig out the dancing shoes for a weekend of swing, two step, cha cha and more.

No matter age or experience, it’s almost time to dig out the dancing shoes for a weekend of swing, two step, cha cha and more.

Event director Keith Foraie promises there’s lots of dance for everyone at the ninth annual Dance de Rock, a fundraiser for cancer research that supports the Tour de Rock and Hope Afloat dragon boat team. It happens Sept. 14, 15 and 16 at the Filberg Centre.

“It’s a fabulous event; everyone has a great time. People definitely get their money’s worth,” said Foraie. “We cover a whole bunch of dance styles that are taught throughout the weekend for all levels.”

Dance de Rock is a weekend-long event which features 20 workshops, a buffet, DJ entertainment and a professional dance demonstration.

Foraie noted the event is not only for established dancers, but a new pass is available for those who want to try dancing for the first time.

“For anyone who wants to try can come down and dance without having to commit to the entire weekend,” he explained.

The spectators pass includes the Friday night dance, one beginner workshop, snack buffet and entertainment, for $25.

A weekend pass for $150 includes the choice of 18 dance workshops, Friday and Saturday night dances and more.

Foraie said the idea for the event began in 1998 when he visited a Tour de Rock fundraiser at 19 Wing Comox.

“One of the MPs (military police) had cancer and they were doing a fundraiser for him, and I thought it was really cool. It got me thinking what I could do with the dance community,” he explained. “After getting posted to Greenwood (Nova Scotia) and then returning to the Valley in 2003, the first Dance de Rock began in 2004.”

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the two organizations.
