VIDEO: Fire damages workshop at storage company on Ryan Road

A fire broke out in a workshop at Cozy Mini Storage on Ryan Road on Thursday.

A fire broke out in a workshop at Cozy Mini Storage on Ryan Road on Thursday.

Lisa Loewen, owner of Simply Amish Furniture Gallery, which is located right next door, said at around 10 a.m. she saw smoke and called 911, then checked the structure to confirm no one was inside.

“[I saw] smoke billowing when I pulled into the yard. At first I didn’t exactly know what it was … so I went up to the building just to make sure the property manager wasn’t inside, opened up the door and I just saw black smoke.”

Comox Fire Rescue Chief Gord Schreiner has confirmed the affected structure was a workshop and there were no injuries in the fire.

No other buildings were damaged by the fire. One vehicle parked outside the shop was moved and another was protected by a hose stream.

Schreiner said it was too early to tell the cause of the fire but said it was likely caused by an electrical problem.

“It’s a shop, it’s got electrical services to it, it more than likely had a heater in it or something like that,” he said.

Three fire trucks and approximately 15 firefighters responded to the fire.
