Working in tandem, firefighters from Courtenay and Oyster River managed to save a Merville house from burning to the ground Saturday around 6 p.m.

The fire started inside a shed that was attached to the two-storey house on Fitzgerald Road.

“For a fire being that far out of town, it was a really good save,” said Kurt MacDonald, deputy fire chief of the Courtenay Fire Department. “When we got on scene it had pretty much consumed the shed, and was burning up the cedar siding of the house up to the roofline. Crews knocked it down from the outside. All in all, the residential portion of the house was still in decent shape.”
