Flu, Norovirus outbreaks run their course at Comox hospital

All units at St. Joseph's General Hospital have resumed normal activity now that two outbreaks have been declared over.

All units at St. Joseph's General Hospital have resumed normal activity now that two outbreaks have been declared over.

As of Wednesday morning, the Influenza A outbreak, which was declared at St. Joseph's March 30, has been lifted, according to a notice from Toby Krell, the hospital's manager of infection prevention and control, and Michael Pontus, the president and CEO of St. Joseph's.

The outbreak is lifted six days after the last new reported case of influenza.

The Norovirus outbreak, which started March 25, was declared over Monday.

Nine patients on the hospital's third floor — the medical-surgical floor — had the symptoms of Norovirus, an infectious gastrointestinal virus.

At about the same time, there was an influenza outbreak on the second floor, the transitional care unit, and there were three lab-confirmed influenza cases at the hospital.

Visitors are again welcome to St. Joseph's.

"We wish to take this opportunity to remind all visitors to utilize the hand hygiene stations conveniently located throughout the hospital before and after visiting residents and patients," wrote Krell and Pontus. "Thank you for your support and co-operation in observing the temporary restrictions in place during these two outbreaks."
