GUSS THE PUPPY might need more surgery.

A man's best friend in need is a man's best friend indeed. That is why an appeal has gone out to help the owner of a Boston terrier puppy pay off expenses she incurred after her one-year-old pet Guss was struck by a vehicle.Claudia Scherf of Merville says Guss ran into the road and suffered a cracked skull and had his jaw broken in two places."He's just a little gaffer. There was blood running out of his nose," Scherf recalls of seeing her pet lying in the road. The original bill to mend Guss' injuries was $3,000. But it now appears further surgery might be necessary to amputate one of the puppy's legs.To help raise funds to cover the expenses, a collection jar has been set up at the Whistle Stop Neighbourhood Pub, where Scherf works as a server.Susan Cameron, Scherf's friend, is working to set up a bank account where people can contribute, and anyone who would like to donate their empties to a bottle drive is asked to contact Cameron at 250-871-4440 to make arrangements.Scherf says donations to help her pay the bills are needed as soon as possible. Any extra monies raised after Guss' bills are paid will be donated directly to the SPCA, she adds.sports@comoxvalleyrecord.com
