TWO INJURED DRIVERS were taken to hospital after a head-on collision Monday on the Old Island Highway near Ryan Road.

Two people went to St. Joseph's General Hospital after a head-on crash Monday near one of the highest-collision intersections in the Comox Valley.Although full extraction was not required, firefighters helped the single occupants of both vehicles to extricate themselves after the collision at about 7:15 p.m. on the Old Island Highway near Ryan Road in East Courtenay.The roadway was reportedly slick at the time of the crash.Rain mingled with oil might have been a factor in the mishap, deputy chief Dennis Henderson of the Courtenay Fire Department said at the scene.Excessive speed could also have contributed, he added.Injuries to an unidentified man and a woman taken to hospital were undetermined. The road was closed for a brief time until the vehicles, one of which was badly damaged, were removed from the scene.
