An elderly man is dead following a collision on Highway 19A Sunday afternoon between Washer Road and Beaufort Road in Union Bay.

According to Sgt. Brian Nightingale, collision reconstructionist with the RCMP, the collision happened around 12:50 p.m. when the man’s car left the southbound lane into the path of a pickup truck headed north.

The driver of the car was determined to be dead at the scene while the driver and a passenger in the truck were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

“We’re not exactly sure why the car all of a sudden just turned into the path of the truck,” said Nightingale. “He’s an elderly man but there’s no indication of any kind of medical issue.”

Nightingale added road conditions and visibility were good and they are waiting for a statement from the driver of the truck to determine exactly what happened.

The northbound lane of the highway was closed in this area for over two hours but has been reopened.
