Comox Valley singer-songwriter Joey Clarkson is known for her sweet melodic voice and relatable lyrics; no one could have guessed just how relatable they would turn out to be.

“I wrote these songs while experiencing great difficulties,” says Clarkson. “My husband is a British musician and my application to join him in London was excessively delayed due to a technical error on the government’s application website. Music became a way for us to find comfort in difficult times.”

The tracks on the album reflect those difficult times, and feature a co-write between Joey and her husband Peter Dixon - the album title track The Year That Never Happened.

Clarkson has included another Comox Valley musician on her album. Violinist Christina Duncan - now based in Vienna - is featured as an instrumentalist. “

Christina was a recurring member in my band during my time at Vanier Secondary. I have always been impressed by her talent, and consider myself fortunate to have her as a friend. Music brings people together and this project was no exception. I remember phoning Christina on a Thursday and asking ‘what are you doing this weekend?’ and the next day she was on route to London to work on the tracks.”

Due to the current limitations of live concerts and touring, Clarkson is encouraging people to enjoy her music free of charge on Spotify.

“My friends, family and fans in the Comox Valley have been a constant support of my musical journey and I would be honoured to show my appreciation”.

You can check out the entire album on Spotify, and all major digital and streaming platforms, under Joey Clarkson, The Year That Never Happened.
