Another $130,000 is being pumped into the Denman Cross Island Trail project.

Comox Valley Regional District needs the extra money to comply with Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure requirements.

The electoral areas services committee was in agreement with pulling the additional money from the Community Works Fund.

The cost estimate for the next phase of the trail project came in about $130,000 over the $131,092 previously planned.

“The additional costs are largely due to unforeseen retaining walls, labour constraints and material supply associated with island projects,” said Ian Smith, general manager of community services, in his written report to the committee.

Smith told directors that the portion of the trail set for construction is along the main road on Denman that leads to the ferry on Hornby. The “kind of hair pin turn” at the end of the road indicates the next phase of construction.

“We had envisioned the path on the left-hand side going to the ferry. Then when discussions were finalized with MoTI, they wanted it moved to the other side of the road. The costs have gone up because more engineering work is involved,” he said.

Electoral Area A director Bruce Jolliffe said he was fully supportive of the project proceeding.

“The steps we have to take now are more challenging. We’re getting good progress here,” he said.
