The Comox Valley RCMP and School District 71 have successfully completed Mountie Camp, an empowering initiative aimed at engaging and inspiring local youth.

Mountie Camp, held from May 14 to May 19, brought together a diverse group of 24 enthusiastic young individuals between the ages of 15 and 17. The camp, led by dedicated RCMP officers, provided a unique opportunity for local youth to learn about law enforcement, build valuable life skills, and foster positive relationships with law enforcement professionals.

Throughout the week-long program, participants actively engaged in a range of activities designed to promote teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills. The young participants had the opportunity to delve into various aspects of law enforcement, including crime scene investigations, police vehicle operations, physical fitness and readiness, drill and deportment, mental health, police dog services, major crimes, traffic investigations and much more.

The camp culminated with a formal graduation ceremony held on May 19 when family members, community leaders, and distinguished guests joined the participants to celebrate their achievements and the personal growth they experienced throughout the program. Mayors from the Village of Cumberland and The City of Courtenay attended, along with representatives from CFB Comox, Crime Stoppers, and K’omox First Nations.

“Mountie Camp was an incredible opportunity for local youth to engage with RCMP officers and learn about law enforcement firsthand,” said Const. Monika Terragni, media relations with the Comox Valley RCMP.

“The positive impact this program has had on their personal development was visible throughout the week and is truly inspiring.”

Former Mountie Camp participant, Cost. Jordan Barnes, credits his experience at the camp for inspiring his career in law enforcement. He learned valuable lessons from RCMP members, which motivated him to join the RCMP as a regular member.

Even during his six-year tenure as an auxiliary member, he always made it a priority to attend Mountie Camp and share his knowledge with others. Now, as a constable with six years of experience, he has worked in Northern BC and is currently stationed at the Port Alice RCMP detachment.

Through Mountie Camp, he formed lasting friendships and connections with RCMP members who served as role models, and he is proud to maintain these relationships to this day.

The Comox Valley RCMP would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to CFB Comox, all the sponsors, community partners, and volunteers who generously contributed their time, resources, and expertise to make Mountie Camp a resounding success.

The partnership between the RCMP and the School District is invaluable to make this camp a success. The sponsors include individual donor(s), CrimeStoppers, Comox Valley Volkswagen, Black Creek Lions Club, Rotary Club of Courtenay, Thrifty Foods in Crown Isle, Choir Boys, and Plus Gourmet Catering. Their support clearly demonstrates the collective commitment to empowering and investing in the future leaders of our community.
