Exterior siding and interior finishings are underway for the new regional district office building at 770 Harmston Ave., next door to the school district office. The two-storey building is 2,105 square metres.

Last year, Knappett Projects Inc. was awarded the construction contract. A building permit valued at $8.3 million was issued last October. Construction began last August, and is expected to be complete late this year. At this point, the CVRD is not sure when staff will move to the new building.

The current office at 600 Comox Rd. is problematic because it is prone to flooding. The space is inadequate, and the lease cost is expensive. By relocating out of the floodplain, essential services — water, sewer and garbage — will be able to continue in times of need. Moreover, corporate records, fleet vehicles and information technology infrastructure will no longer be threatened during floods and storms.

“A specifically designed post-disaster emergency operations centre (EOC) will provide emergency response to the public during emergency/disaster events,” the CVRD website states.
