Comox council decided on Wednesday (June 7) the size of waste carts the town will give each household as Comox switches to a system of automated garbage pickup.

Scheduled to begin in 2024, the town will employ automated trucks to collect garbage. This transition requires households to have standardized carts that can be manipulated by the trucks, as workers will no longer lift and empty garbage along the road.

In keeping with the change, Comox council needed to choose what size of new cans to order for each type of household in the area. Council chose five distinctions:

• Single family homes will get a 120L garbage can, a 360L recycling can, and a 360L organics can.

• Single family homes with a suite will get two 120L garbage cans, two recycling cans, sized 240L and 360L, and one 360L organics can.

• Duplexes will get a 120L garbage can, a 360L recycling can, and a 240L organics can per unit.

• Triplexes and quadplexes will get a 120L garbage can, a 240L recycling can, and a 120L organic can per unit.

• Curbside multi-family houses will get a 120L garbage can, one 240L recycling can, and one 120L organics can per unit.

In sizing the cans, council aimed to balance households’ need for large cans with drivers’ need for street space.

The town decided to automate its waste-collection trucks in Spring 2022 after “significant service interruptions” caused generally by a lack of garbage workers and the continued breakdown of old collection vehicles.

With the new 2024 program rollout, households in Comox that can receive curbside pickup will be required to abide by the new policy.
