Despite unsolicited requests on social media, Mount Washington Alpine Resort is asking the public to not drop off items for their employees who lost their accommodations and belongings last weekend in the Cona Hostel fire.

Spokesperson Darcy Friesen said the resort is not set up to accept donated goods, but credited the local mountain community for coming forward to help those in need.

“So many people have shown a lot of compassion and have opened up their doors … the mountain has made arrangements with different people. Staff that live up here opened their doors.”

During the morning of March 23, a fire broke out at the hostel in downtown Courtenay. While all occupants made it out, it is now up to the insurance company to determine if the building is a write-off.

While he doesn’t know the exact amount of Mount Washington employees who stayed at the hostel, Friesen estimates at least half a dozen lost their residence.

“The (Mount Washington) village has been very generous.”
