Despite some damage to their ceiling and doors, AIDS Vancouver Island returned to business as usual despite a neighbouring fire early Sunday morning in downtown Courtenay.

Around 12:08 a.m., crews responded to a fire that damaged Too Good To Be Threw thrift store on 6th Street.

Sarah Sullivan, manager of AIDS Vancouver Island whose property neighbours the thrift store said the organization was able to open on time Sunday morning around 11 a.m. using their back entrance.

“The firefighters did come into the front to make sure the fire didn’t spread … we are so appreciative of the firefighters and RCMP and are deeply saddened for the (Comox Valley) Transition Society. They are a fantastic resource for the community and we want to offer our condolences to them.”

Sullivan explained she received a message about the fire early Sunday, and was at the building around 9 a.m. helping to clean up. She noted her landlords, tradespeople and a restoration company were on site in the morning to alleviate the smoke smell and repairs in the building.

“It could have been incredibly worse. We were open at 11 a.m. - it was a great team effort - just awesome.”
