This Thursday, North Island College will host 1,000 Grade 11 and 12 students from the Comox Valley, Campbell River, Qualicum, Parksville, and Gold River at NIC’s Comox Valley campus for the High School Open House.
Students will have the opportunity to explore educational areas of interest, experience hands-on activities and demonstrations, talk one-on-one with current NIC students and faculty, meet with student advisors to discuss programs, finances and career opportunities, and hear one of Canada’s leading keynote speakers talk about his personal journey to answer the question, ‘What should I do with my life?’
For the past five years, this year’s keynote speaker, Ryan Porter, has been about one thing: inspiring young people to carve their own paths and live the lives they dream about. Ryan’s own journey led him to scuba dive in Honduras, surf in Hawaii, backpack through Europe, and teach English in Japan.
Students will have the opportunity to choose from over 45 sessions, exploring topics and potential careers in business, tourism and hospitality, health and human services, science, liberal arts, trades, and fine arts.
Activities will range from learning how to design apps for smart phones and decorating cakes, to treating injuries, learning about wave optics and what a criminologist does, to wiring a light switch and plumbing a house.
Students attending the concurrent Fine Arts Experience will also enjoy hands-on workshops in drawing, screen printing,
computer design, ceramics, and sculpture.
