Picket line planned for North Island College

North Island College campuses will be behind picket lines for two days next week as CUPE local 3479 members take job action.

North Island College campuses will be behind picket lines for two days next week as CUPE local 3479 members take job action over contract negotiations.

As a result, all on-campus instruction will be cancelled for those two days.

CUPE local 3479, the union representing support staff employees at North Island College, informed the college late Friday afternoon that it will be undertaking strike action on Tuesday, Nov. 20 and Wednesday, Nov. 21. Strike action will include a full withdrawal of services by CUPE members and pickets will be established at all campuses.

In support of CUPE’s job action, the North Island College Faculty Association (NICFA) has advised its members to respect any picket lines that are established, a college spokesperson stated in a press release.

As a result, all on-campus instruction scheduled at NIC’s campuses (Campbell River, Comox Valley, Mount Waddington, Port Alberni), centre (Ucluelet) and vocational centres (Tebo and Vigar) will be cancelled on those two days. Off-campus instruction, including clinical and practicum placements, and instruction taking place in-community will continue as scheduled.

All college campuses will remain open on both days from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for students to access study space and limited student services.
