Plan to build new commercial-residential development in Courtenay approved

The transfer of commercial and residential Crown Isle lands north of Ryan Road will go ahead.

The transfer of commercial and residential Crown Isle lands north of Ryan Road will go ahead.

Courtenay council adopted the Official Community Plan and zoning amendment bylaws Monday without discussion.

The bylaws adjust the zoning boundaries for Crown Isle lands behind the Nissan dealership on Ryan Road, transferring 3.4 hectares of commercial land from along Ryan Road and near Mission Road to a more central area.

There is no change in the amount of commercial land.

The lands along Ryan Road and near Mission Road will change from commercial zoning to mixed use residential, which allows a mix of housing types.

During a public hearing regarding the bylaws last week, two couples who live in the nearby area spoke against the proposed changes, concerned about noise from increased commercial activity.
