Public hearing set for Old Orchard in Courtenay

A public hearing is set for an application that would see six single residential homes with carriage houses near downtown Courtenay.

A public hearing is set for an application that would see six single residential homes with carriage houses near downtown Courtenay.

The five lots, one of which is a double lot, are located within the block bounded by Second and Third Streets and Cliffe and Duncan Avenues, adjacent to Laurel Lodge.

The public hearing is scheduled for Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. at City Hall. The proposal includes an amendment to the Official Community Plan and rezoning.

According to City staff report, the site was rezoned from Residential Two to Comprehensive Development Nine in 2000 to accommodate a proposed care facility for seniors with about 100 rooms. The care facility was not constructed.

The rezoning would bring the properties' zoning back to Residential Two zoning, which according to the staff report, is in line with the surrounding properties in the Old Orchard area.

The proposal is for six single-family homes — four of those with carriage houses attached, and one with a granny flat.
