Two additional members will join the Comox Valley RCMP this spring.

Courtenay council approved the 2011-12 municipal contract policing resource request Tuesday.

The contract includes the addition of two members, effective April 1, bringing the Comox Valley detachment’s total strength to 30.4 members.

It also includes a budget of $4,893,656, of which the City of Courtenay is responsible for 90 per cent — or slightly more than $4.4 million.

The projected annual cost of $290,000 for the increase in strength will be funded from Courtenay’s host gaming revenues, according to the report from Tillie Manthey, the city’s director of financial services.

There will also be an increase in 2011-12 general contract costs of about $147,500 that relates to increased costing for regular member pensions.

This contract increase will be funded from taxation, and Manthey estimates it will mean a property tax increase in the range of one per cent.
