Between Jan. 3-9, the Comox Valley RCMP received 11 calls regarding thefts from vehicles. Thirteen vehicles had been entered. Items taken from them included licence plates, cigarettes, a quantity of change/cash, wallets, clothing and food. The Comox Valley RCMP are reminding residents to ensure their vehicles are locked at all times, and that valuables are not left in them.
Break, enter, leave empty
On Jan. 3, the Comox Valley RCMP were advised of a break, enter and attempted theft to locked storage containers, behind a business located on the 3200 block of Cliffe Avenue, Courtenay. Once entry was gained, the unknown culprits were disappointed, as the containers had been emptied before the break and enter. (2017-106)
Van stolen, tools taken
A theft of a vehicle was reported to the Comox Valley RCMP on Jan. 4. A work van had been taken sometime overnight from the 2100 block of Wallace Avenue, Courtenay. The van had approximately $10,000 worth of work tools in it. The vehicle was located, later in the day, in Parksville. Unfortunately the van had been cleaned out, all the tools were stolen. BMX bike stolen
A bicycle theft was reported on Jan. 4. The Comox Valley RCMP were advised that overnight, someone had gone onto a property located on the 1100 block of Malcolm Place, Courtenay. The bike is described as a lime green BMX. (2017-155)
Flare gun found
The Comox Valley RCMP were advised that a flare gun had been found on the 2600 block of Windermere Avenue, in Cumberland. The area that the flare gun was found also had several spent fireworks casings in the area. The flare gun was found empty and appeared to be quite old. (2017-157)
Vehicle smash and grab
On Jan. 6, the Comox Valley RCMP were advised of a vehicle window that had been smashed and stereo equipment stolen out of it. The vehicle had been parked, overnight on Strathcona Parkway, on Mount Washington. An unknown person had broken the rear window and gained entrance into the vehicle. (2017-234)
Stolen quad for sale
On Jan. 6, the Comox Valley RCMP were alerted to a stolen quad that was for sale. The person that wanted to buy the quad had acquired the vehicle identification number and ran it on the public Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) website (cpic-cipc.ca/index-eng.htm). Anyone can run the VIN for a vehicle, boat, firearm, bicycle or property on this website and, if it had been reported stolen, it will come up as such. If a person does buy a stolen item, it can be seized from them and they will be out the money paid for it. (2017-242)
Excessive speed
While out on patrol, Jan. 6, a general duty member of the Comox Valley RCMP was travelling on Veterans Memorial Parkway. A vehicle appeared to be travelling at a high rate of speed toward the member. The member activated their radar unit and the vehicle was found to be travelling at 109 km/h in the posted 60 km/h zone. A traffic stop was initiated. The driver was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. (2017-271)
Busy day for MVAs
On Jan. 8, the Comox Valley RCMP responded to 13 motor vehicle collisions throughout the Comox Valley. Six of these incidents were two-vehicle collisions and seven were single-vehicle collisions. The Comox Valley RCMP would like to remind drivers, as the weather changes, you may run into snow and ice. Ensure you slow down for the conditions, have good winter tires and leave ample room between you and other vehicles as you travel.
