Spinning in Comox will help Canadian Tire's Jumpstart program

Glenn Hascarl knows there's something to be said about spinning around in circles.

Glenn Hascarl knows there's something to be said about spinning around in circles, and for the second year in a row, he's putting his experience to help others.

Hascarl, a fitness instructor with the Comox Recreation Commission, is organizing the second annual Spin-a-Thon, scheduled for 24 hours beginning March 2 at 3 p.m in the annex of the Comox Community Centre.

"We really wanted to do something for kids, and to bring attention to the new gym," he explained.

All profits to the Spin-a-Thon will be donated to the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program to help financially disadvantaged kids participate in physical recreation.

"Sports meant a huge part to me when I was growing up, and played a major part of my life," added Hascarl. "With any sport, the cost of everything goes up."

Last year's event featured 120 participants with teams ranging anywhere from six to 24 people. Individual members spin for one-hour slots.

Hascarl said the inaugural event raised approximately $8,000 dollars for the organization, and he's hoping double the fundraising goal this year.

People can organize a team, or register as individuals and can be assigned to a team.

He noted participants don't have to be cyclists or regular gym attendees to join.

"(The event) is aimed for people of all fitness levels; it's meant to be a really fun fundraiser," he said. "A lot of people are looking forward to it again, and even if you end up with a slot early in the morning, it's quite fun. You can meet and talk with people to keep you going."

Harscarl noted there will be snacks, fruit trays and water to keep participants fueled throughout the day and night along with prizes, and hopes to have double the amount of participants as last year.

He added 100 per cent of funds raised stays within the Comox Valley, and thanks his sponsors who have supported the event this year.
