The St. Joseph's General Hospital management team celebrates regaining its accreditation status from Accreditation Canada.

St. Joseph’s General Hospital is again an accredited hospital in accordance with Accreditation Canada, the Comox hospital announced Wednesday evening.

St. Joseph’s fully met all requirements in a recent “focused visit” and provided evidence of compliance with six additional standards, the hospital said in a news release. This led Accreditation Canada to confer “accreditation with condition” status on St. Joseph’s.

St. Joseph’s must report additional information by November 2011. St. Joseph’s next survey will be in October 2013, in accordance with the normal three-year cycle.

“It is a great recognition of the focus, effort and ability of St. Joseph’s staff to ensure all the criteria identified were met in a short period of time,” said Michael Pontus, president and chief executive officer.

“It was a challenge met during an extremely busy time," added board chair Ron Philip. "The staff are to be admired for their dedication and their commitment to quality and safe care of residents of the Comox Valley, and all staff are to be congratulated."

“St. Joseph’s received full support from all levels,” said Pontus.  “From its owner, the bishop of Victoria, to its board and committees, to the Vancouver Island Health Authority, with the loan of a staff member as adviser, to the engagement of physicians, department leaders, staff and volunteers.

“It has been a renewing experience,” said Pontus. “We look forward to a strong and positive relationship with Accreditation Canada well into the future.”
