The sports centre commission has recommended a feasibility study — at no cost to the regional district — to determine the need and interest for indoor tennis in the Comox Valley.

For years, Tennis Canada has rated B.C. the top area for growth of the sport in the country, according to a district report. The organization has noted limited access to tennis in the Valley, which has just 12 outdoor courts, four of which are lit.

Tennis Canada, the school district and community partners have discussed the interest and viability of developing an indoor facility. Vanier Secondary has been identified as a potential site. Although SD 71 would not have funds for construction, the district would consider providing land, as it did for the running track and synthetic turf field.

The idea is to:

•Construct a four-court facility at the Sports Centre within the next five to seven years;

•Conduct a feasibility study with $20,000 supplied by Tennis Canada at a future date;

•Implement programs for players of all ages and abilities;

•Host local, provincial and international Tennis Federation tournaments;

•Provide a multi-purpose facility that incorporates other sport programs, trade shows and community events.

The commission recommends a report be incorporated into the strategic planning process for 2015. The recommendation will appear before the CVRD board for consideration.
