B.C. government promising to drop HST percentage

The B.C. Liberals are promising to cut the harmonized sales tax rate by two percentage points over the next three years. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon also proposes to raise corporate income taxes by two points to 12 per cent, and delay a small business tax cut scheduled for next year. The small business income tax sits at 2.5 per cent, scheduled to drop to zero in 2012.

Mom and Dad Hornby still producing eaglets

World-famous Internet webcam stars the Hornby Island Bald Eagles recently welcomed two new arrivals. the eagles, known affectionately as Mom and Dad Hornby by their fans, have been a pair for many years and have successfully fledged 18 eaglets. The eagle pair are thought to be at least 28 years old.

City of Courtenay employees sign for four years

The City of Courtenay and the union representing 80 of its employees have reached a four-year agreement. CUPE announced Wednesday that CUPE municipal workers and the City of Courtenay have ratified a new collective agreement.

Comox man no longer BC Ferries commissioner

Martin Crilly now wears just one hat. The Comox resident no longer serves as B.C. Ferries commissioner, his term ending April 30 after he was appointed to the post in August 2003. He was replaced May 1 by Gordon Macatee.

A 12-year-old girl who loves hockey is the inspiration behind a fundraising barbecue and walk this weekend for Emily Wisden. Wisden, owner of Play It Again Music Recycle, is hosting a charity barbecue Saturday afternoon to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
