RHODES

Alfred (Alfie)

May 11, 1918 - April 12, 2008

Passed away peacefully at his home in Courtenay early Saturday morning, the 12th of April 2008. Alf was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, England. Predeceased by his wife Joyce Alice Rhodes, his sister Ivy, and brothers Ernie, Frank and Cecil. Survived by his daughter Diane Caddell (John) of Courtenay, grandchildren John and Jennifer, great-grandchildren Amelia and Easton and several nieces and nephews. He was a corporal in the Royal Air Force during WWII and served in England and the middle east. Alfie was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 39 years. In England he was a printer at the Hull Daily Mail until he and his family came to Canada is 1966. Alf and Joyce were apartment managers in Vancouver and Courtenay until they retired in the early 1980's. Alf was an avid gardener and darts player. He also enjoyed photography and has left us many pictures and memories. Most importantly, he was a kind man who loved to joke with people. He often said that he would try to live long enough to see his great-grandchildren, Amelia and Easton graduate from high school. He loved them and their energy. Unfortunately he couldn't live that long. We were pleased that the day before he passed away was perfectly normal. He walked to town, picked up a few items, and walked home. He ate his dinner, fed Wendy, his cat, and read the paper before going to bed. We want to thank Dr. Musgrave for being Alf's doctor and helping him to live a long and healthy life. A private, family only ceremony will be held. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Heart and Stroke Fund in Alf's name.
