It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful husband, father and Opa on May 21, 2016 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Al now rests with the love of his life, Doris.

Al will be lovingly remembered by his son Allan (Charlene); daughters Susan and Donna (Markus); nine grandchildren: Matthew, Ashley (Steve), Dustin, Dorothea, Tim, Courtneay, Haley, Trenton and Taylor; three great-grandchildren: Hanna, Ryleigh and Molly; and his special and caring companion, Vivian. He will be greatly missed and will be forever in our hearts.

Al was born in Owen Sound, Ontario, and joined the RCAF at the age of 18. While stationed in Zweibrucken, Germany he met Dorothea and was happily married for 53 years. In Zweibrucken his oldest two children, Susan and Allan Jr., were born. Al was eventually transferred to CFB Trenton in 1963 where his youngest daughter, Donna was born. The family was transferred to the Comox Valley in 1972 where they stayed and called it home. Al was a member of the 888 wing and the Comox Legion Br. 160. At the Comox Legion he served on the executive committee assuming various responsibilities over the years. He was the branch photographer and gardener for over a decade or more. Al acted as Chair of the election committee for many years as he had a great knowledge of a members individual skill and talents that served him very well in that capacity. Al could always be counted on to volunteer for all sorts of tasks to the benefit of the branch and the legion in general.

Al loved to garden and took pride in his flowers at his home, which many people saw from the road as they drove by. For many years he looked after the gardening at the 888 Wing and the D’esterre house. He enjoyed his woodworking and spent his entire life playing darts.

A Poppy Service to remember Al will be held at the Comox Br. 160, 1825 Comox Ave on Saturday, May 28 at 1:00 p.m. Please come and join the family after the service in the lounge for a beer on Al Sr.

Together again, rest peacefully
