NIKOLAISEN, Ann Shaw

1924 ~ 2010

Ann passed away on Saturday, 7th August, at Cumberland Lodge, surrounded by her family.

Ann was born on May 1, 1924 in Bradford, England. She travelled to Canada in 1947 on the S.S. Aquitania with her mother, Ethel Bowling. We always laughed at the story about how the two of them dressed in their Sunday best and snuck up to the top deck to enjoy a "proper" afternoon tea.

Ann worked as the Assistant to the Secretary of School District 71, then became the first woman to hold the position of Secretary of Howe Sound School District in Squamish. She was the President of the Business and Professional Womens Club. She enjoyed hiking as a member of the Comox District Mountaineering club, and skiing at Forbidden Plateau.

Ann and Bob were married in 1954 and lived on the Back Road in Courtenay. They were owner/operators of the Home Store in Cumberland from 1960 to 1975.

Ann was a fantastic knitter, and developed an interest in growing begonias, making pottery, and traveling after retirement.

Ann moved into Cumberland Lodge in 2000, and received the most gentle, loving care throughout her stay. Her family is forever grateful for the kindness shown to both Ann and Bob over the years.

Ann leaves her husband of 56 years, Bob Nikolaisen, her son Christ and his wife Jane, her daughter Janet and husband Tony, and her grandchildren Caitlin Nikolaisen, Christi and Steve James, Brendan Woods, Kyle Inglis, Jeremy Inglis and Josh Inglis.

Flowers gratefully declined in consideration of donations in Ann's memory to Cumberland Lodge, PO Box 400, 2696 Windermere, Cumberland, BC V0R 1S0, for those wishing. A family gathering will be held at a later date.
