November 23, 1934 - December 1, 2019
Bert Keryluk passed away peacefully early Sunday, December 1. He showed enormous courage and tenacity dealing with health challenges in his later years.
He was born on the family farm in Meleb, Manitoba on November 23, 1934. It was there that he learned resourcefulness and self-reliance. His appetite to learn and to broaden his horizons led him to enlist with the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 18.
His career started as an Aircraft Electrician. He switched trades to become a Flight Simulator Technician. His natural talent and ingenuity to fix /repair was recognized with several awards during his service career including the Order of Military Merit. This award was established to provide a worthy means of recognizing outstanding merit and exceptional service by members of the Canadian Forces. He designed and installed crucial modifications which enabled the Voodoo training squadron to incorporate NORAD training equipment and procedures. He then made equivalent changes to the simulators at Bagotville, Chatham, and Comox. In Comox Bert rejuvenated their deteriorating CF-101 Simulator. He did this so well that the US National Guard requested and received his services for a period to bring their trainer up to the "Keryluk Standard". Often Bert was able to perform tasks which the civilian contractor could not.
During his service with the Canadian Armed Forces he traveled abroad and across Canada, ending his 29 year career as a Master Warrant Officer serving at the Canadian Forces Air Navigation School. His final transfer was to the Comox Valley, British Columbia. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Victoria Keryluk; son Ken (Melissa) and family Zac, Stephanie, Jack Henry and Mack; and daughter, Sharan (John) and family Ashley and Harrison.
The family would like to thank all the family and friends who made traveling to Nanaimo to visit Bert in the hospital easier for his wife Victoria and also the staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and the Cumberland - Nanaimo Dialysis Unit for their skilled care.
