March 10, 2021
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Bessie Fern (Sand) gently passed away in her 90th year on March 10, 2021 with her daughters by her side. Mum was the third eldest of four daughters Helen Smith, Effie Curran(deceased) and Ingrid Jahren. She was born in Kimberly, BC to parents Stella Fern and Olaf Engeman Jahren.
In 1951, she married Al Adams becoming a military wife, this meant moving across Canada several times and once to Germany. Over those years Mum had six children. In 1967, her military days ended with one final move to Comox. She settled onto a farm on Guthrie Rd and in 1976 the farm was sold when mum and dad parted ways.
Mum was the matriarch to our large, boisterous, blended family spanning four generations. She was a full time mum and unofficial foster mom for those needing a place to stay. She welcomed everyone into her home and family with warmth and generosity. Mum was a great cook and with 6 kids she always had a garden. In the summer she canned fruit, froze vegetables, made pickles, jam and relish. She baked dozens of cookies, the cookie jar was always full, and her apple pies were famous.
Mum coordinated the local fundraising campaign for the kidney foundation for many years. She was also a long time member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Comox Legion. She enjoyed curling in her youth and bowled well into her senior years. She was an avid bridge player, but it was the crib games where she will be fondly remembered.
In 1970, Mum met George Sand through mutual friends. They were married on August 29, 1981, creating an even larger family. Together they built a home where Mum lived until she moved to The Views in 2017 after George passed. Mum and George were best friends who enjoyed doing everything together. They loved music, dancing, cards, camping, and travelling.
Mum grabbed life by the horns and made the most of all the twists and turns that made her life story. Mum's happiness and joys have come from her family. Throughout the years, she hosted annual Christmas parties, special birthdays, went to countless graduations and weddings and celebrated the joy of each new baby.
Mum was predeceased by her husband George Sand, son Bob Adams, daughter Kat Adams, grandsons Graham Agar, Buddy Potter. She is survived by Barbara (Brian) Culley, Kim (Dave) Delucry, Linda (Dean) Agar, Patti (Bob) Lebarron, Stan (Pierette) Potter, Geri Sand and Grant Piddleburg, along with 18 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
Thank you to all the caregivers who contributed to her care and happiness and a special thank you to all those who learned to play crib during her time at The Views. At this time, the family is celebrating her life in private.
