September 22, 2018
At the age of 94, surrounded by family, Betty Schmidt passed away at her home on Denman Island on September 22, 2018. Born in Victoria to Jim and Eunice (nee Baikie) Dalziel, Betty was the oldest lifetime resident of Denman Island, spending all but 5 years of her life there with short stints to Hornby Island and Saskatchewan.

Betty's loves were her family, her faith, and the Island where she raised five children with her husband Walter. Betty was a gracious host, feeding and housing the many guests Walter brought home.

Family and friends will cherish her hand-knitted, crocheted, and embroidered gifts and remember her remarkable talent for writing insightful poetry, stories, and memoirs.

Betty's quiet faith was the source of the strength, love, and support she shared with family and friends.

The matriarch of a large extended family, Betty was predeceased by husband Walter Schmidt, sister Necie Strachan, brother Ron Dalziel, son Ken Schmidt, son-in-law Bob Andor, and grandsons Chester, Charlie and Walter Schmidt. Betty will be lovingly remembered by daughters Linda Schmidt and Eunice Schmidt, sons Larry (Judy) Schmidt and Alan Schmidt, daughter-in-law Charline Schmidt, 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Betty will be honoured at a Funeral Mass on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 10:00 am at Christ the King Catholic Church (1599 Tunner Drive, Courtenay). Family and friends are invited to celebrate Betty's life at 1:30 pm with tea and lunch at the Denman Island Seniors Hall, 1111 North West Road.
