January 23, 1953 - August 15, 2018
Bruce was born in Victoria and graduated from BCIT in 1973, taking with him a Chemical and Metallurgic diploma. He worked briefly as a Geo Chemist, but came to Port Hardy that same year to work for Island Copper as an Environmental Chemist.

I guess it didn't fit because 3 years later he left that position to join the local 'North Island Gazette' newspaper as a darkroom technician. The photos were never better. He quickly made his way to the editorial dept. and later became the very first News Editor at the Gazette.

Bruce left the North Island in 1981 and worked at the Arrowsmith Star and Nanaimo Times before returning to the Gazette as editor in 1985. Unfortunately in the newspaper business, ownership changes, publishers change and so can an environment. Bruce moved on to the Comox Valley to work for The Record.

He made friends, forged relationships and stayed for 11 years. Bruce was always active in service to the community and aside from the many news, editorial and photography awards Bruce garnered, he was awarded the Kinsmen Clubs highest honour in 1999.

He was voted a Life Member, an honour that had only been awarded to 8 people since 1938! Bruce freelanced after that and eventually moved back to Port Hardy where he partnered up with old compadres at the short lived Mid Coast Beacon.

But then he met Wanda in 2003. He once told a friend that he had met the perfect woman. She invited him over to watch football and served gourmet hot dogs. She turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to his life. They had shared interests. She played Slo-Pitch and he loved to ump. They had their favourite walks and he was quite sentimental when it came to Wanda.

In 2010 Bruce was diagnosed with Huntingtons, a disease he had always dreaded inheriting. At a young age he decided, 'best not to have kids' even though he adored so many of them. He went into care in Port Hardy in 2013 and was moved to Victoria this year where he died with Wanda beside him. Bruce was a rebel, very principled with a strong sense of right and wrong, especially when it came to journalistic ethics.

But he also had a very wry sense of humour and quite an affectionate heart. Bruce was predeceased by parents Donald and Berna and siblings David, Janice and Patricia. He is survived by his brother Roger and of course, Wanda.

He will also be missed and remembered by the friends he kept for years.
