October 20, 1943 - October 30, 2019
It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of Mort MacDonnell. Mort was born in Upper Sackville NS to John and Nina MacDonnell. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Diana MacDonnell (Nee Grey); his daughter Sharon MacDonnell (Evan Gough) and granddaughter Jaiden Gough of Cumberland; his brothers Robert (Judy), Murray (Joanne), and Ian; his many nieces and nephews as well as several international exchange students who call him Dad.
He was predeceased by his parents and his son Scott MacDonnell.
Mort joined the RCAF in 1962 and spent most of his military career in Search and Rescue piloting the Albatross and Buffalo aircraft in Summerside, PEI and Comox, BC. He was also stationed in Gander, Nfld. where he flew the Labrador helicopter. For a time, he 'flew a desk' at the Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax, NS. He loved his job and found the work very fulfilling. He lived in almost every Canadian province and spent time peacekeeping in Egypt.
In his retirement, he and Diana travelled extensively throughout Canada, the US and Mexico. He loved to spend the Canadian winters elsewhere, preferably somewhere warm. Mort's last years were challenging as he struggled with heart and respiratory problems. He passed away peacefully at North Island Hospital in Comox BC, with Diana by his side.
Mort donated his body to UBC for medical research. Always joking, he would say this was his last opportunity to go to University.
Mort had requested his passing be private therefore there will be no funeral.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Mort's memory to the Canadian Lung Association or a charity of your choice.
