Died March 6, 2009, in Courtenay, BC.
"Kay" was predeceased by her husband, Captain Jim Hicks, in 1992; by her parents, John Hosford and Emily Colvin; sister, Irene Moreau; brothers, Charlie & Dick Hosford; brothers-in-law Leo Moreau, Lloyd Hunter, Ray Hicks, and Bob Hicks; sister-in-law, Mary Hicks; and friend Harold Skippen. She is survived by her children, Arlene Godfrey (Ron) of North Vancouver, and their children Randy, Richard, Janice, Rodney, and Jodi; Ted Hicks (Tamsen Matheson) of Courtenay, and their children Adam, Beth, Judy and Lee; and Colleen Hicks of Royston, and her children, Kelly Van Balkom and Josh Chapman; by their families including great-grandchildren Greer, Claire, Paige, Kiana, Erika, Matt, Max, Emily, Dylan, Tabitha, Jake, Courtney, Nick, and Cassidy; her sisters-in-law Jean Hosford, Mildred Hunter, and Ann Hicks; and many nieces and nephews. Over her years in Quebec, Ireland, Armstrong, Vancouver, Gibsons, Westview, Nanaimo, North Vancouver, and Courtenay, Kay/Mom/Nanny exhibited a gritty spirit that saw her through tough times and personal losses, and an open heart that made lasting friends, reached out to those in need, and made space not only for her own children but also for many in her family and circle of friendship that needed a home for awhile. She loved a cup of tea, a good book, a chance to laugh with friends and family, telling her stories, the sound of music, and to kick off her shoes and dance. Together Mom and Dad provided a secure home and a strong foundation for us all. We are grateful to Dr. Matous, the staff at Glacier View Lodge, and the folks from People at Home for their good care. A Memorial graveside service will be scheduled later in Valley Gardens in Cedar.
