April 16, 1934 - September 23, 2021
Donald Archie Malcolm, born April 16, 1934 in Slate Falls, Ontario, died September 23, 2021 in Comox BC after a long and valiant battle with dementia.
At age 17, Don joined the Navy and served in Korea, then followed a varied career ranging from mutual fund salesman to truck driver, carpenter, homesteader, poet, environmentalist and activist.
Don was the proud father of six and came from a large family in Slate Falls. Don and his partner, Delores, co-founded the award-winning environmental magazine Watershed Sentinel on Cortes Island. He loved the outdoors, exploring the forests and lakes, and hiking and fishing, and especially travelling across Canada as he went home for family visits almost annually.
Don loved music and dancing and had a great sense of humour.
When Don knew he was developing dementia, he had this poem printed on business cards that he handed out to everyone he met as his way of contributing to a better world.
Family of Strangers
In this humanity,
In which we all live,
We are all
A part of each other.
What a wonderful world
We will inherit,
When we recognize ourselves
When we meet.
- Don Malcolm, 2009

With gratitude to all the wonderful caregivers along this path he travelled.
