June 23, 2006

Bennie, Donald (Bowser)

1931 - 2006

Don was born on February 18, 1931 in Nanaimo, BC and passed away in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Comox on June 23, 2006 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He leaves behind his loving wife of 41 years Lois, stepson Darryl Calnan of Comox, son Ron (Maureen) of Calgary, daughters: Sandra (Wade) Maybie of Victoria, and Dawn Bennie of Courtenay. Grandchildren: Marc and Julia Bennie, Beau Calnan, Charlie, Jackson, and William Maybie. Mother-in-law Mable McClure, sister-in-law Jacquie Bennie, brother-in-law Red (Noni) McClure, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Don was predeceased by his father and mother, infant brother, and brother Jack Bennie.

Don was an electrician by trade and took both his apprenticeship and worked at the Canadian Colliers in Union Bay. When they closed, he worked for Franklin electric for many years and then at CFB Comox until retirement.

Don will be lovingly remembered for his love of family, his gentle kindness, and his easy outgoing personality. He liked nothing better than, what he called, ‘B.S.’ sessions with the boys. Don loved sports, coaching, watching and playing. Golfing with the Union Bay Seniors was a Wednesday event not to be missed, horseshoes in the spring and going fishing. He loved them all!

There will be a Celebration of Don’s life on July 8, 2006, at the Union Bay Community Hall at 1:00 p.m. If so desired, donations in Don’s memory may be made to B.C. Children’s Hospital, Special Care Nursery, 4480 Oak St., Vancouver, BC V6H 3V4
