March 30, 1931 – June 28, 2016

Doug passed away June 28, 2016 at the age of 85, following a long and very determined battle with heart disease.

He leaves his wife Wendy, daughters Karen Sutherland, Jan Scanlan and son-in-law John, son Steve Betts and daughter-in-law Jackie; grandchildren Cassie and Mike Sutherland, Ian and Melissa Betts, of whom he was so proud. Leaving also, sisters Anne Ridley (Terry) and Kay Bishop, brother-in-law Pete Rose, nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his son-in-law Steve Sutherland, very much missed by our family.

Doug was born March 30, 1931 in Rimbey, Alberta. He had many tales to tell of life as a child growing up on the farm. The family moved to Victoria when he was eight. These were happy years for him, graduating from Mt. View Sr. High where he had been fully involved in school team sports. No problem getting him to school!

He took his carpentry apprenticeship from Payne & Townsend and G.H. Wheaton, later starting his own business, becoming an excellent finisher.

In 1959 he married Wendy in Vancouver, moving back to Victoria where their 3 children were born, then settling in Courtenay in the 70’s.

His interests ranged from sports, gardening, reading and family.

We thank Dr. Swanson for Doug’s exceptional care. Also, Dr. Silcox, Marla, Trish and the always up-beat nursing staff at St. Joe’s for the many on-going visits. Wendy would also like to express thanks and appreciation to Dr. Thomas, the air-vac crew and the wonderful cardiologists and nursing team in Telemetry at Royal Jubilee.

Special thanks also to Joan, Georgina, Bonny and Karen T. and Albert.

No flowers please. Private family arrangements.
