In loving memory ~
Born in Vancouver, B.C., on May 3, 1931
Deceased in Courtenay, B.C., on April 22, 2025
Liz Hyde navigated life with quiet elegance. She was a shining example of what it means to be a good person, a true lady, and a role model for generations to come. Liz always went out of her way to help others, offering a listening ear and a compassionate presence. She stood by her values, living with honesty and authenticity.
Throughout her life, Liz volunteered with and contributed to many community organizations in both Vancouver and Edmonton. Most notably, she served in the schoolroom at Vancouver Children's Hospital, a place that held a special place in her heart. She was recognized for over 12 years of dedicated service there.
Other organizations she supported through volunteer work included the Edmonton Women's Shelter (WIN House), the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra Women's Committee, the Glenora Community League, the Arthritis Society of Canada (Vancouver), and Kitsilano Neighbourhood House. Liz also taught Sunday school at Christ Church in Edmonton and St. Mark's Church in Vancouver.
In her university years, Liz enjoyed summers hiking the Rockies and working at the Banff Springs Hotel. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A. in 1953.
Her deep love and respect for nature endured throughout her life and inspired her children. One hot summer in Vancouver, she hand-watered a block of young saplings. Those trees grew into strong, tall sentinels— a quiet, lasting testament to her care and determination.
Liz is remembered with love by her children and their partners: George (Jolita), Nancy (Alf), Patricia (Bert), and John (Elaine); her granddaughter, Emily (Stephen); and her great-grandson, Wilfred. She was predeceased by her parents, Ivadele and Harry Tupper; her stepsister, Jackie Eddy Caithness; and her dear friend, Matt Tomlen.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Casa Loma Seniors Village, as well as the nursing staff at North Island Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. Lauren Baerg and Dr. Sandra MacDonald for their compassionate care. At Liz's request, a private family memorial will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Covenant House Vancouver or to a charity of your choice.
