In Loving Memory ~
Ellen Ouellette (Hansen), a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend left us May 6, 2022.
Born to Anders and Anna Eskelund Hansen May 8, 1943 in Denmark she is survived by her children Gitane (Kevin), Kateri (Daryl) and John and by her grandchildren, Liam, Alex, Abby, Madeline and Carter. Predeceased by her husband Bill in 2018.
Ellen came to Canada at 8 and met her husband Bill in 1964 and after a 3 month whirlwind romance married on August 8. They enjoyed 54 years together exploring the wilderness of Canada, biking, hiking, boating, camping, fishing and skiing.
Ellen lived a life of adventures that were big and small. She has hiked the Juan de Fuca trail, been on cruises and had multiple trips to back to Denmark. Some equally exciting but smaller adventures were to the farmers market, garage sales with friends and raiding Costco for samples.
All these adventures brought her joy and furthered her determination to explore even more. Even a fear of heights did not stop her. Trails with only logs for bridges meant crawling to reach the other side, not stopping.
Family was very important to her and she spent hours playing with grandchildren: UNO (where one forgotten shuffle meant she only had blue cards), a horseback riding adventure, fig tree raids, garden exploration, baking treats, proud teaching of new technology (a blood pressure cuff ) and just being able to be goofy just like one of the kids.
Ellen proudly honoured her Danish heritage with family and continued Danish traditions which seemed to consist mainly of the amazing food.
Ellen has many long time friends. Her schedule was so packed she had to keep a calendar so she did not mix up her dates for tea, with her dates for shopping and her farmers market days with garage sales. She joined Toastmasters to improve her public speaking but stayed shy and quiet which drew people to her and they learned this hid a friendly, caring and sweet woman.
Ellen lived across Canada in many communities, moving with air force transfers. She and Bill retired to the Comox valley and built a house. Her last home in Victoria at the James Bay Care centre found her surrounded by a kind staff and new friends who shared many sweet stories about her final adventures.
