In loving memory ~
Sadly, we announce the peaceful passing of Elvina, at the age of 94.
Elvina was born in Cumberland, B.C., to Arthur and Rose (Pearse) Watson. She was predeceased by her parents and four brothers, Albert, Reginald, Wilfred and Marvin. In 2014, Elvina was predeceased by her husband, Allan Kilpatrick, after 59 years of marriage.
Elvina is survived by her four children, Michael (Debbie) of Church Point, N.S., Christine (Gordon) of Ottawa, Ont., Ian (Sylvia) of Campbell River and Erin (Joe) of North Saanich; four grandchildren, Sean (Meg) and Allan Kilpatrick and Laurel (Alex) and Peter Karlsen; and two great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Clara Kilpatrick. Elvina is also survived by sisters-in-law Jean (Ed) Maskiewich and Donna Watson (Ross) as well as several nieces and nephews.
Elvina was a star athlete at Cumberland High School and taught elementary school in various locations in the Comox Valley following her graduation from the Victoria Normal School in 1947.
Elvina was singing in the United Church choir in Courtenay when a handsome young air force officer took notice. After marrying Al in 1954, she traded her teaching career for the adventure of motherhood. As the wife of an air force officer, she lived across Canada and in the U.K. before finally returning to Comox in 1978.
A people person, Elvina was always involved with friends and community. There was always a bridge club or two, the Officer's wives club, the church choir, the new-to-you shop, and time served as a "Brown Owl." In Scotland in the swinging '60s there were what her children took to be some wild parties. Back in Comox, Elvina continued playing bridge, took up golf and enjoyed several years as a marriage commissioner.
Al's air force postings gave Elvina the opportunity to explore most of Canada and the couple took advantage of Al's posting to Scotland to explore many countries in Europe. Retirement allowed even more time to travel, and Elvina and Al enjoyed more trips to Europe, cruises throughout the world with their good friends Maisie and Ian Mortimer, and annual trips across Canada to visit their children and grandchildren.
Her children will remember her caring, her humour, her great cooking and sense of fun and adventure.
The family would like to thank the staff of the special care unit at Glacier View Lodge in Courtenay for their attentive care over the past two years.
