Born in Middleton, Nova Scotia, Fran's family moved to Moncton N.B. where Fran attended high-school. Upon graduation she went to Montreal where she graduated from the Royal Victoria Hospital with a degree in Nursing. She then had the opportunity to work with, Dr. Robert Usher, in Neonatology; studying the gestational age of Premature Infants. In 1969, her name was included alongside Dr. Usher's on a medical paper published in the Encyclopedia Britannica. Fran was active in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Montreal, serving as Chapter President.
In 1993, Fran moved to Fanny Bay, B.C. with her friend Margaret Carr; where they spent many years participating in community activities. She was an active and founding member of the Comox Valley Presbyterian Church, serving as the Clerk of Session for many years.
In 2012 Fran was the recipient of a 'Special Recognition' Award given by the BC Wheelchair Basketball Society; it was bestowed upon Fran for being 'an individual who exemplifies all that is positive about sport and competition."
Fran was an avid skier and birder; and had a real passion for children.
She will be missed by her many friends in Montreal, New Brunswick, Ontario, Fanny Bay and Comox.
The memorial service for Fran McLean will be held at the Comox Valley Presbyterian Church, on November 20, 2021 at 11am. It will also be live streamed on YouTube, go to cvpc.ca for more information. To attend in person please contact the church directly at 250 339 2882
