In Loving Memory ~
We are very sad to announce the passing of Garry E. Johnson on March 25, 2022 at the Comox Valley Regional Hospital.
Garry was the beloved husband of Eloise Johnson - together for 74 years, married for almost 69 -- father of Trudy and Brian (Cheryl-Lynn), and grandpa to Chloe-Lane.
Garry was born in Toronto on September 7, 1929. He was a proud veteran of the Korean War during which he served on the H.M.C.S. Iroquois. Garry and Eloise lived in Toronto for 6 years after being married in 1953, moved to Port Hope for a few, and then to London, ON where they raised their kids and lived for over 30 years. As empty nesters, they followed their dreams and passion for helping people and moved to Whitehorse, Yukon.Having had enough of the northern winters, they finally settled in Comox, BC in 1989, a town they both have loved.
Garry was an avid reader—he could read just about any book in a day. He loved woodworking and taking care of his yard. He had a passion for roses and lilies, and a great dislike for dandelions.
Garry genuinely liked people. Those who knew him remember him as "kind, warm, friendly, funny and down to earth ... a gentle giant".
He was strong, too -- a fighter who overcame many challenges throughout his life. Sadly, until this last one...
The family would like to thank the people who helped Eloise to care for Garry these past few years—especially those who went above and beyond.
There will be no service and the family requests no flowers. Donations can be made in Garry's name to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
