August 13, 1928 - December 12, 2016

Gary passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. He was born into a coal mining family in Nanaimo. However, Gary identified himself as a Bevan boy. He had fond memories of growing up with his two brothers. Gary graduated from high school in Cumberland and went to work in the mines to raise money to attend Normal School in Victoria and become a teacher. He married Gladys (Garner) in 1952 and they raised their 5 children in Royston, where the family has resided since 1960. “Mr. James” had a 37 year teaching career. He taught in Enderby, and Cumberland, and was principal of Glacier View and Royston Elementary Schools for many years. Gary was actively involved in coaching basketball and baseball and volunteered in the Royston and Comox Valley communities. During their retirement Gary and Gladys enjoyed camping and fishing adventures with their family and friends. They also worked together to create a beautiful garden.

Gary is predeceased by his wife Gladys, his brothers Elmer and Glen and his granddaughter Shelby. His pride and joy were his children: Blair (Peggy), Karen King (Lorne), Kevin (Lisa), Cheryl Klassen(Ian) and David (Manny), grandchildren Jeff King, Dan King, Ryland James, Caila James, Shanelle James, Shelby Klassen and great grandchild Chassi King. He is fondly remembered by his sisters in law Joey and Carol and many nieces and nephews.

Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Comox Valley Seniors Village and also to Gary’s caring friends and neighbours. At his request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers you may wish to donate in Gary’s memory to Y.A.N.A., www.yanacomoxvalley.com or 495 Fitzgerald Ave. Courtenay BC V9N 2R1.
