SWIFT, George Alexander

Sept 9th 1921- June 3rd 2012


George passed away on June 3rd 2012 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, BC. George grew up in Stonewall Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in England and Continental Europe. He was discharged from the Army in 1945.


Upon his return from the war, he married his wife of 66 years, Jennie May Johnston and began farming NW of Stonewall Manitoba. George farmed for 6 years but was forced to leave because of chronic asthma due to allergies caused by grain dust.


The family moved to British Columbia settling in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. George was very successful in the heavy construction sector. He loved operating heavy equipment. In 1958, he was the General Foreman for Marwell Construction building the upper levels highway out of Horseshoe Bay. George had a diversified career which took him all over B.C. building roads and other large scale projects.


He leaves behind his wife Jennie May Swift; sons: James (Christine) and Douglas (Diane); grandchildren: Shane (Karla), Melanie, Kelly (Joel) and Heather (Colin); great grandchild Nicholas, nieces and nephews.


A Memorial Service for George will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, 367 Cliffe Ave. in Courtenay, BC on Friday June 22nd, 2012 at 3:00 pm.
