January 6, 1940 - November 29, 2021
Gerald McLaughlin passed peacefully on November 29, 2021, after a brief battle with cancer. Born on January 6,1940 in Edmonton to Lloyd and Eva McLaughlin, Gerry married Viola (Barbara) MacDonald in 1960 and had three children. He enlisted in the RCAF after high school, spending time in Newfoundland, Whitehorse, Germany, Cold Lake, Shearwater, and Comox with the 409 Squadron until he retired in 1982. He then worked for SD 71 as a custodian, retiring one last time in the early 2000's. Gerry loved curling from an early age and was active in the Canadian and overseas curling world, reaching the pinnacle of the game when he won the Edinburgh International Curling Championship in 1966, the first time in history it was won by a team from outside Great Britain. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and enjoyed playing pool with his buddies and watching curling, football, baseball, and hockey. Gerry is survived by his children, Debra (Lew), Michael (Linda), and Dennis; five grandchildren (Lewis, Amanda, Emily, Lindsy, and Mathew), numerous great-grandchildren, his brothers Larry and Jimmy, half-brothers David, Chris and Ian, and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents Lloyd and Eva, his sister June Ann, and his wife of 52 years, Barbara.
As per Gerry's wishes there will be no funeral or memorial service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Gerry's memory to the charity of your choice.
