1914 – 2007

Gil was called home to be with the Lord in the early hours of April 27 at the age of 92. His wife Nita and daughter Ruby were at his side.

He was born September 3, 1914 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, the second child of John and Ethel Zerkee’s 9 children. In the spring of 1929, Gil, his parents and siblings moved to Loon Lake, Saskatchewan to homestead. Nine years later, they re-located to the Comox Valley. After trying various jobs, he was hired in 1943 to work as a mechanic for Cyril Burns. He remained there for 10 years. In 1953, Gil, his first wife Grace and their 4 children moved to Victoria and later to Langley, B. C. Gil returned to Victoria in 1962 where he enjoyed working for the Saanich Parks Department for 12 years. He returned to the Comox Valley in the late 1970’s where he remained until his death.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Nita; his 4 children: Donna (Gil) Turcotte of Springside, SK, Della (Bill) Letkeman of Welland, ON, Jim Zerkee of Mission, B. C. and Ruby (Erv) Letkeman of Abbotsford, B. C.; his 10 grandchildren: Mimi Horton, Rick Muik, Ron Letkeman, Thomas Letkeman, Sam Letkeman, Jennifer Loewen, Elizabeth Field, Carolyn Wikkola, Tim Letkeman & Joni Pulko; 26 great-grandchildren; 1 great-greatgrandchild; and various nieces and nephews.

Gil was pre-deceased by 2 brothers Alfred and Len; by 3 sisters: Mabel, Evelyn, and Edith; by 1 great-granddaughter, Joy. He is survived by his 3 brothers Earl (Maura), Ernie (Sylvia) and Bill (Selma).

Visitation Wed. May 2 at Piercy’s Funeral Home, Courtenay, B. C. from 7 – 9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Thurs. May 3, 2007 at 12 p.m. from Courtenay Fellowship Baptist, 2963 Lake Trail Rd, Pastor Peter Rabey officiating. Interment to follow in the Courtenay Civic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons.
