Harris

Nov 8, 1918 – March 26, 2009

It is with great sadness that the family of Harris Purchase announces his passing on March 26, 2009, at the age of 90.

Predeceased by his parents, Edgar and Elizabeth, and his sister, Sadie, Harris is survived by his brothers, Fred (on Vancouver Island) and Eddie (in Newfoundland), his sisters Gladys and Alice (in Newfoundland), his loving wife of 65 years, Myrtle Vivian Purchase (nee: Follett), daughter Dawn Hill (Ray) in Bellingham, Wa., son Gary (Anneli) in Comox, B.C., three grandsons, and six great-grandchildren.

Born in Laurenceton, Nfld., Harris worked as a millwright for the Bowater Mill in Corner Brook until 1964 when he moved his family to Duncan and worked at the Crofton Pulp and Paper Mill. When he retired, he and Myrtle lived in Saltair, Victoria, and Comox, and then moved to White Rock for his final years.

Harris had amazing ingenuity for repairing and improving items. He was meticulous in caring for his home and everything in it.

He will be remembered as a kind, considerate, and peace-loving man who cared for his family and provided well for them. He had a great sense of humour. His gentle manner won him many friends. Harris will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Special thanks to the staff of Morgan Place in Surrey for their dedicated care of Harris in the last six months of his life.

A memorial service will be held at Morgan Place on Sunday, April 26, at 2:30. The immediate family will have a private celebration of Harris' life in Comox at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Harris’ memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
