January 29, 1930 – December 31, 2016
With great sadness we announce Helen passed away peacefully in Comox, BC on New Years Eve. Born to John and Jenepher Stephen in Winnipeg, MB she was predeceased by her older brother, Dr. Lawrence Stephen of Dauphin, MB and survived by her younger brother Clark Stephen of Cranbrook, BC.
Upon her death, she is also survived by her three children Stephen, Michael, and Jenepher McLennan, her six grandchildren (Amanda, Heidi, Charmaine, Shelby, Brodie, and Janaya), and her six great-grandchildren.
Helen was a Registered Nurse who after graduating from the Ottawa Civic Hospital in 1951 moved to Vancouver, BC where she married and raised her family. Over the years she worked in a variety of nursing jobs including Occupational Health. She was one of the first nurses to fly with the Air Ambulance. Her second marriage brought her to Sidney on Vancouver Island and a few years later she returned to Vancouver and her former job that she loved, at the Pacific Press.
On retirement in 1993 she moved to the Comox Valley. In her early years in Courtenay she volunteered for COPS and Hospice and travelled the world. Her later years were spent with the many friends she had made in the valley.
She was a strong woman who was truly an inspiration. You could feel her love in the way she smiled. It was hard not to be happy around her.
A memorial service is planned for Friday, January 20, 2017 at Comox Valley Funeral Home, Cremation and Reception Centre, 1101 Ryan Road at 1 pm. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions can be made to the charity of their choice.
The family wishes to thank the kind and caring staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox as well as Dr. Russell-Atkinson and Dr. Dawadi.
