Herbert Evans

1932 - 2002

of Little River, passed away after a short battle with cancer on June 1st, 2002.

Herb is survived by his wife of 43 years, Shirley Evans, his daughter, Denise (Jan) Evans, and his devoted dog, Jake. He is also survived by family in the UK: siblings Johnny, Agnes, Myra, Lewis, Jenny, Tom and Dan and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents John and Jane and by his brother Gwilym.

Herb was born August 26th, 1932 in Newcastle Emlyn, Wales. He emigrated to England to work as a teacher in 1952, and to Canada in 1967. He moved to the Comox Valley in 1970. Herb taught shop and coached soccer at Robb Road Junior High School (as it then was), Lake Trail Junior High School, and Vanier Secondary School. He retired in 1992.

Herb’s retirement allowed him to devote himself entirely to a garden with which, if he had had the space, he could have eliminated world hunger with zucchini and kiwi fruit. In the hours not spent developing the perfect tomato plant, he created countless unpatented inventions that made life easier for his friends and family. He took pride in his careful craftsmanship and leaves many beautiful pieces of woodwork.

Herb was a keen skier and held a season’s pass until the 2001-2002 season. He played tennis against opponents that he befuddled with his two forehands and ambidextrous serving abilities. He had a passion for soccer and could find a soccer match on television at any hour of any day. His strong commitment to social justice showed in his many small acts of kindness and in his community involvement over the years. He will be greatly missed.

At Herb’s request, there will be no service. A memorial bench will be placed in Kin Beach Park. Donations in his memory may be made to the Comox Valley Hospice Society.
