October 12, 1926 - May 25, 2019
Hugh W. Smith, 92, of Courtenay, BC, passed away on May 25, 2019 surrounded by love in the North Island Hospital. He was born to Zanea Webb and William Smith on October 12, 1926 in Regina, Saskatchewan.
He married Margaret Alma Gray in 1955, who survives him. Hugh is also survived by daughter Illoana Smith (Steve Blair), Scott Smith (Margo Millette), Drew Smith (Rhonda Hart) and grandchildren Alex (Rob), Drew and Jacob (Claire). Hugh was predeceased by his sister Illoana Budd and brothers Merv Smith and Wesley Smith.
Hugh graduated from Central Collegiate in Regina and did further schooling in finance and management at the Banff School of Fine Arts as well as receiving his Real Estate License.
Hugh was a born entrepreneur and storyteller. His career spanned a wide berth of occupations and industries including florist, haberdasher, driver, debt collections, retail credit, sales/territory management, finance, sales, franchisee, dealer, realtor, broker and volunteer. His long-term employment with John Deere saw him rise to VP Finance. These roles took Hugh and family across Canada where they made many lifelong friends. Marg and Hugh were known for their lively and often themed parties. Together, they were active in curling, camping, sailing, square dancing, gardening, horseshoes, music, bridge and volunteering for the Gizeh Shriner's. Hugh loved parades and was a fixture as Jambtart the clown and later as an ATV rider with the Comox Valley Shrine Club #5. Hugh also loved his Collie dogs (Duffy, Trooper) and Sheltie, Whiskey. When they moved from North Vancouver to Fanny Bay (Vancouver Island) and then Courtenay, Hugh was well known to many as he walked his dog and chatted to everyone he met. He loved to share a story and a laugh with friends, family and neighbours.
