Predeceased by Alice, his loving wife of 67 years, Ian passed away on September 14, 2019 at the Views in Comox. Family gathered around as this special brother, uncle, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather slipped away. A natural leader and compassionate teacher, Ian devoted his life to social improvement through education, civic involvement, Kiwanis, United Church of Canada and the John Howard Society.
Proud of his UBC Mechanical Engineering degree that opened so many doors throughout his life, the iron ring rarely left his hand. After his UBC graduation his journeys took him from Vancouver to Grand Forks, Trail, Calgary, and finally the Comox Valley where he joined School District 71 to teach at Courtenay High and Vanier Sr. Secondary. After his teaching career he joined the Parole Board of Canada and followed that with many years behind the wheel of the Upper Island Driving School until his final retirement at 65.
Ian is survived by his brothers Hap (in Australia) and Phil (Emily), six children Jim (Darlene), John (Kathy), Chris (Nancy), Sylvia (Sandy), Cindy (John), Robin (Monika) and many grand and great-grand children and nieces and nephews. We are forever grateful for his wise counsel and generous soul. Every day our thoughts will be with him and his gentle ways.
A celebration of Ian's life will be held at 1 pm on Saturday November 16, 2019 at Comox United Church, 250 Beach Drive, Comox BC.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ian's name to the Comox Valley Community Foundation or the charity of your choice.
